bhavati cātra ślokaḥ— idaṃ hi vedaiḥ samitaṃ pavitram api cottamam | dhanyaṃ yaśasyam āyuṣyaṃ śrotavyaṃ niyatātmabhiḥ ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “And here a verse is recited: This (Mahābhārata) is, as it were, gathered together with the Vedas—pure and indeed supreme. It is auspicious, fame-bestowing, and conducive to long life. Therefore it should be listened to by those who have mastered their minds.”
The verse asserts the Mahābhārata’s scriptural stature—aligned with the Vedas—and teaches that disciplined, self-controlled people should regularly listen to it because such hearing is purifying and yields prosperity, good fame, and longevity, i.e., ethical and spiritual uplift through attentive śravaṇa.
In Vaiśaṃpāyana’s narration, a traditional commendatory verse (śloka) is introduced to praise the Mahābhārata itself, emphasizing its sanctity and the recommended practice of listening to the epic as a dharmic act.
