तस्मिन्‌ समागमे सुभू: शर्मिष्ठा चारुहासिनी । लेभे गर्भ प्रथमतस्तस्मान्नपतिसत्तमात्‌,सुन्दर भौंह तथा मनोहर मुसकानवाली शर्मिष्ठाने उस समागममें नृपश्रेष्ठ ययातिसे पहले-पहल गर्भ धारण किया

Transliteration

tasmin samāgame subhūḥ śarmiṣṭhā cāruhāsinī | lebhe garbhaṃ prathamatastasmān nṛpatisattamāt ||

Translation

Vaiśampāyana said: In that union, the beautiful Śarmiṣṭhā—of charming smiles—conceived a child for the first time by that foremost of kings. The verse marks the narrative turning-point where a private relationship bears public consequence through progeny, setting in motion questions of marital duty, legitimacy, and the ethical weight of desire within royal life.
