अध्याय ७४: अक्रोध–क्षमा–निवासनीति
Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
अस्त्वयं सर्वदमन: सर्व हि दमयत्यसौ । स सर्वदमनो नाम कुमार: समपद्यत
astv ayaṁ sarvadamanaḥ sarvaṁ hi damayaty asau | sa sarvadamano nāma kumāraḥ samapadyata ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Let this boy be called Sarvadamana, for he indeed subdues all.” Thus the child came to bear the name Sarvadamana—signaling a destined mastery not of mere force, but of disciplined restraint and rightful control.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse links true power with damana—restraint and the capacity to bring impulses and obstacles under control. A worthy ruler is characterized not merely by strength, but by disciplined mastery that can ‘subdue all’ in a dharmic sense.
The narrator reports the bestowal of a name: observing the child’s extraordinary ability to tame or overpower, the elders declare that he should be called Sarvadamana, and the boy becomes known by that name.
