Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
ākāraṁ gūhamānā ca manyunā ca samīritā | tapasā sambhṛtaṁ tejo dhārayāmāsa vai tadā ||
Duṣyanta said: Though stirred by indignation, she concealed her outward form; and at that time she held within herself the radiance amassed through austerity—restraining her power rather than letting anger govern her conduct.
The verse highlights ethical restraint: even when anger arises, one should govern outward action and contain one’s power (tejas) through discipline (tapas), rather than letting wrath dictate behavior.
Duṣyanta describes a woman who, though provoked by anger, keeps her appearance and reaction controlled, holding within herself the potent spiritual energy she has accumulated through austerities.
