Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest

ṣaṣṭiś ca gāvas triśatākṣa dhenava ekaṁ vatsaṁ suvate taṁ duhanti | nānāgoṣṭhā vihitā ekadohanās tāv aśvinau duhato gharma-mukthyam ||

Rama said: “There are three hundred and sixty milch-cows—marked by three hundred (and sixty) ‘eyes’ (i.e., days). All of them bring forth a single calf, and they nourish it by milking. Though they stand in many different stalls and are assigned to diverse rites, their milking is in truth one: from them the seeker draws the fruits of scripturally enjoined actions, taking that calf as the means. Yet the real ‘milk’ to be drawn from all those acts is one—an aspiration for true knowledge. It is you two, the Aśvin twins, who milk out the excellent, warming oblation (gharma) and the hymn of praise.”
