Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest

sa evam uktas tam upādhyāyaṁ pratyuvāca—bho etāsāṁ gavāṁ payasā vṛttiṁ kalpayāmīti | tam uvāca upādhyāyo—naitad nyāyyaṁ paya upayoktuṁ bhavato mayā nābhyanujñātam iti |

Thus addressed, he replied to his teacher: “Sir, I sustain my livelihood by the milk of these cows.” The teacher then said to him: “This is not proper. I have not granted you permission to consume milk; therefore, using the cows’ milk is inappropriate for you.”

Educational Q&A

Even seemingly harmless acts (like taking milk) become ethically improper when done without the teacher’s permission; discipline in dharma includes obedience, restraint, and transparency in one’s means of sustenance.

A student explains to his teacher that he lives on the milk of certain cows; the teacher rebukes him, stating that he never authorized milk consumption and that using it is therefore not right.
