Entry into Khāṇḍavaprastha and Description of Indraprastha’s Founding

atha duryodhano rājā vimanā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha | aśvatthāmnā mātulena karṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca |

Vaiśampāyana said: Then King Duryodhana, dejected at heart, set out together with his brothers—along with Aśvatthāman, his maternal uncle, Karṇa, and Kṛpa. Having witnessed with his own eyes Draupadī’s choice of Arjuna (the white-charioted hero) by placing the garland upon him, Duryodhana was overwhelmed with sorrow and humiliation; and thus he turned back toward Hastināpura with his companions. The episode underscores how wounded pride and envy, when unchecked, begin to harden into hostility and adharma.
