Vaiśampāyana said: “By honoring, in the proper manner, the guests who arrive at your home—saintly people, the aged, children, and your teachers—may your years continually pass in this way.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse upholds atithi-dharma and social righteousness: one should spend one’s life (year after year) in properly honoring guests, virtuous people, elders, children, and teachers—each according to their due place and needs.
Vaiśampāyana, in the course of narration, voices a benedictive instruction: he blesses/urges that the addressed person’s years should pass in the continual practice of fitting hospitality and reverence toward those who come to the home and those worthy of honor.
