Vidura Conveys Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Message to Drupada

yathendrāṇī harihaye svāhā caiva vibhāvasau | rohiṇī ca yathā some damayantī yathā nale |

Vaiśampāyana said: “Just as Indrāṇī is devoted to Indra, Svāhā to Agni, Rohiṇī to Soma, and Damayantī to Nala—so too should you remain lovingly attached and faithful to your husbands.” The verse teaches by revered exemplars that a wife’s dharma is expressed through steadfast affection, loyalty, and committed partnership within marriage.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches marital dharma through well-known exemplars: a wife should cultivate steadfast love, loyalty, and committed devotion toward her husband(s), holding the relationship as a sacred ethical duty.

Vaiśampāyana, in the course of narrating the Adi Parva, cites celebrated divine and heroic couples—Indrāṇī–Indra, Svāhā–Agni, Rohiṇī–Soma, and Damayantī–Nala—to instruct or reinforce an ideal of faithful attachment within marriage.
