niḥśabde tu kṛte tasmin dhṛṣṭadyumno viśāmpate | kṛṣṇām ādāya vidhivan meghadundubhiniḥsvanaḥ ||
When silence had fallen over that assembly, O lord of the people, Dhṛṣṭadyumna—having taken Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) in accordance with the prescribed rite—stood in the midst of the arena. With a voice deep and resonant like thunderclouds and kettle-drums, he then spoke words that were meaningful, excellent, and sweet—signaling that the proceedings would now be carried forward under dharma and proper formality rather than mere spectacle.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse foregrounds vidhivan—acting according to prescribed rule—showing that even in a charged public contest, legitimacy and ethical order are affirmed through proper procedure and solemn public declaration.
After the assembly falls silent, Dhṛṣṭadyumna formally leads Draupadī and stands at the center of the arena, preparing to announce the next step of the svayaṃvara proceedings in a loud, authoritative voice.
