Uccaiḥśravas Color-Wager and the Nāga Curse

tam uddhartum aśaktā vai sarve devagaṇās tadā | viṣṇum āsīnam abhyetya brahmāṇaṃ cedam abruvan ||

At that time, all the hosts of gods, being unable to uproot it, approached Viṣṇu as he sat there, and also Brahmā, and spoke these words. The verse underscores a recurring ethical pattern in the epic: when collective strength and pride prove insufficient, one turns—humbly and rightly—to higher wisdom and divine guidance rather than persisting in futile force.

Educational Q&A

When even the combined might of many fails, the proper response is not stubborn escalation but humility—seeking higher guidance and aligning action with a wiser, sustaining power (here symbolized by approaching Viṣṇu and Brahmā).

The gods cannot uproot the intended object (contextually, the mountain needed for the larger undertaking). Recognizing their limitation, they go to the seated Viṣṇu and to Brahmā and begin to present their request or report.
