Aurva’s Containment of the Wrath-Fire
य एष दिवि धिष्ण्येन नाकं व्याप्रोति तेजसा । एतस्य तपती नाम बभूव सदृशी सुता,ये जो आकाशगमें उदित हो अपने तेजोमण्डलके द्वारा यहाँसे स्वर्गलोकतक व्याप्त हो रहे हैं, इन्हीं भगवान् सूर्यदेवके तपती नामकी एक पुत्री हुई, जो पिताके अनुरूप ही थी। प्रभो! वह सावित्रीदेवीकी छोटी बहिन थी। वह तपस्यामें संलग्न रहनेके कारण तीनों लोकोंमें तपती नामसे विख्यात हुई
ya eṣa divi dhiṣṇyena nākaṁ vyāproti tejasā | etasya tapatī nāma babhūva sadṛśī sutā |
The Gandharva said: “He who, stationed in the heavens, pervades the celestial realm with his radiance—of that very Sun-god there was born a daughter named Tapatī, resembling her father in splendor. Through her austerity and steadfast discipline she became renowned across the three worlds by the name ‘Tapatī’.”
गन्धर्व उवाच
The verse links inner discipline (tapas) with enduring renown and moral stature: Tapatī’s identity and fame arise not merely from divine birth but from sustained austerity, suggesting that spiritual effort refines and validates inherited greatness.
A Gandharva introduces Tapatī by first describing the Sun’s all-pervading radiance in heaven, then stating that the Sun had a daughter named Tapatī who resembled him in splendor, setting up her significance for the ensuing episode.
