Drupada’s Putrakāmeṣṭi: The Sacrificial Birth of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Kṛṣṇā

amānuṣaṁ mānuṣajaṁ bhīmavegaṁ mahābalam | yaḥ piśācān atītyānyān babhūvātīva rākṣasān ||

Vaiśampāyana said: Though born of human parentage, he was in form and power beyond the human. His speed was terrifying and his strength immense; surpassing other piśācas and rākṣasas, he proved exceedingly mightier than them all.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the epic theme that birth (human origin) does not necessarily determine one’s manifested nature or capacities; extraordinary power can appear in unexpected lineages, and beings are often judged by their evident qualities and actions rather than mere происхождение.

Vaiśampāyana is describing a formidable being: although human-born, he appears and functions as superhuman—terrifyingly swift and immensely strong—surpassing even other piśācas and rākṣasas in power.
