Vāraṇāvata-prasaṃsā and the Pāṇḍavas’ Departure

sa nāgapuram āgamya gautamasya niveśane | bhāradvājo ’vasat tatra pracchannaṃ dvijasattamaḥ ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having arrived at Nāgapura (Hastināpura), the best of twice-born men, Bhāradvāja’s son (Droṇa), stayed there in the residence of Gautama’s descendant (Kṛpa), living in concealment. The episode underscores a prudent, self-restrained approach: a learned man, facing hardship, chooses discretion and strategic patience rather than rash display.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights discretion and self-control as ethical strengths: even a highly learned person may choose concealment and patience to navigate adversity and pursue rightful aims without provoking unnecessary conflict.

Droṇa, identified as Bhāradvāja’s son and praised as a foremost Brahmin, reaches Hastināpura (Nāgapura) and stays secretly in the residence associated with the Gautama lineage—understood as Kṛpa’s household.
