Vaiśampāyana said: All the Pāṇḍavas wept. Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, and Vidura, along with the other kinsmen, were in the same state of grief. They then completed the rites of offering water—acts of filial duty that honor the departed and reaffirm dharma even amid sorrow.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even in intense personal grief, dharma is upheld through prescribed duties toward the departed. The verse highlights that righteous conduct includes completing funerary rites (udakakriyāḥ), honoring ancestors and maintaining social-ritual order.
After the death of their father (contextually Pāṇḍu), the Pāṇḍavas, along with Bhīṣma, Vidura, and other relatives, mourn openly and then perform the water-offering rites for the deceased, completing the immediate ritual obligations.
