Knowing that, because of the curse incurred through the deer, his own capacity for begetting children had been struck down, he spoke in private to Kuntī, his illustrious lawful wife: “Lady, this is a time of crisis for us. In this emergency, support the necessary effort for the begetting of offspring.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames progeny as a dharmic responsibility tied to lineage and royal duty, and it introduces the idea that in a genuine emergency (āpadi) extraordinary measures may be sought—yet still within the language of dharma (addressing Kuntī as dharmapatnī and asking for her sanctioned support).
Pāṇḍu, aware that the deer-related curse has ruined his ability to father children, privately asks Kuntī to support the necessary means for producing offspring, setting up the later recourse to divine begetting through Kuntī’s boon/mantra.
