पाण्डोः तपः-प्रसङ्गः, ऋण-धर्मः, अपत्य-प्राप्ति-चिन्ता

Pāṇḍu’s Asceticism, the Doctrine of Debts, and Deliberations on Progeny

(ततः काले तु कम्मिंश्चिचत्‌ स्वप्रान्ते कर्णमब्रवीत्‌ । आदित्यो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा शूणु वीर वचो मम ।। प्रभातायां रजन्यां त्वामागमिष्यति वासव: । न तस्य भिक्षा दातव्या विप्ररूपी भविष्यति ।। निश्चयो<स्यापहर्तु ते कवचं कुण्डले तथा । अतत्त्वां बोधयाम्येष स्मर्तासि वचनं मम ।। किसी समयकी बात है, सूर्यदेवने ब्राह्मणका रूप धारण करके कर्णको स्वप्रमें दर्शन दिया और इस प्रकार कहा--“वीर! मेरी बात सुनो--आजकी रात बीत जानेपर सबेरा होते ही इन्द्र तुम्हारे पास आयेंगे। उस समय वे ब्राह्मण-वेषमें होंगे। यहाँ आकर इन्द्र यदि तुमसे भिक्षा माँगें तो उन्हें देना मत। उन्होंने तुम्हारे कवच और कुण्डलोंका अपहरण करनेका निश्चय किया है। अतः मैं तुम्हें सचेत किये देता हूँ। तुम मेरी बात याद रखना।/ कर्ण उवाच शक्रो मां विप्ररूपेण यदि वै याचते द्विज । कथं चास्मै न दास्यामि यथा चास्म्यवबोधित: ।। विप्रा: पूज्यास्तु देवानां सततं प्रियमिच्छताम्‌ । त॑ देवदेव॑ जानन्‌ वै न शकनोम्यवमन्त्रणे ।। कर्णने कहा--ब्रह्मन! इन्द्र यदि ब्राह्मणका रूप धारण करके सचमुच मुझसे याचना करेंगे, तो मैं आपकी चेतावनीके अनुसार कैसे उन्हें वह वस्तु नहीं दूँगा। ब्राह्मण तो सदा अपना प्रिय चाहनेवाले देवताओंके लिये भी पूजनीय हैं। देवाधिदेव इन्द्र ही ब्राह्मणरूपमें आये हैं, यह जान लेनेपर भी मैं उनकी अवहेलना नहीं कर सकूँगा । सूर्य उवाच यद्येवं शृूणु मे वीर वरं ते सो$पि दास्यति । शक्ति त्वमपि याचेथा: सर्वशस्त्रविबाधिनीम्‌ ।। सूर्य बोले--वीर! यदि ऐसी बात है तो सुनो, बदलेमें इन्द्र भी तुम्हें वर देंगे। उस समय तुम उनसे सम्पूर्ण अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंका निराकरण करनेवाली बरछी माँग लेना। वैशम्पायन उवाच एवमुक्‍त्वा द्विज: स्वप्ते तत्रैवान्तरधीयत । कर्ण: प्रबुद्धस्तं स्वप्नं चिन्तयानो5भवत्‌ तदा ।।) वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--स्वप्नमें यों कहकर ब्राह्मण-वेषधारी सूर्य वहीं अन्तर्धान हो गये। तब कर्ण जाग गया और स्वप्नकी बातोंका चिन्तन करने लगा। तमिन्द्रो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा भिक्षार्थी समुपागमत्‌ । कुण्डले प्रार्थयामास कवचं च महाद्मयुति:,तत्पश्चात्‌ एक दिन महातेजस्वी देवराज इन्द्र ब्राह्मण बनकर भिक्षाके लिये कर्णके पास आये और उससे उन्होंने कवच और कुण्डलोंको माँगा

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

tataḥ kāle tu kasmiṃścit svapnānte karṇam abravīt |

ādityo brāhmaṇo bhūtvā śṛṇu vīra vaco mama ||

prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ tvām āgamiṣyati vāsavaḥ |

na tasya bhikṣā dātavyā viprarūpī bhaviṣyati ||

niścayo 'syāpahartu te kavacaṃ kuṇḍale tathā |

atattvāṃ bodhayāmy eṣa smartāsi vacanaṃ mama ||

evam uktvā dvijaḥ svapte tatraivāntaradhīyata |

karṇaḥ prabuddhas taṃ svapnaṃ cintayāno 'bhavat tadā ||

Vaiśampāyana said: At a certain time, in a dream, the Sun-god—having assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa—spoke to Karṇa: “Hero, listen to my words. When this night has passed and dawn arrives, Vāsava (Indra) will come to you as a brāhmaṇa. Do not grant him alms. He has resolved to take away your natural armor and your earrings. I am warning you truly—remember what I say.” Having spoken thus in the dream, the brāhmaṇa-form (Sun) vanished on the spot. Karṇa awoke and began to ponder the dream and its meaning.
