Mantra 1
जङ्गिडः। इन्द्रस्य नाम गृह्णन्त ऋसयो जङ्गिडं ददुः । देवा यं चक्रुर्भेषजमग्रे विष्कन्धदूषणम्
Jāṅgiḍa—taking Indra’s Name, the Seers bestowed Jāṅgiḍa. Him the Gods in the beginning made a medicine, a destroyer of Viṣkandha’s bane.
Mantra 2
स नो रक्षतु जङ्गिडो धनपालो धनेव । देवा यं चक्रुर्ब्राह्मणाः परिपाणमरातिहम्
May Jāṅgiḍa guard us, a keeper of treasure as of treasure itself; whom Gods appointed, and the Brahmans (made) a paripāṇa, a smiter of hostile will.
Mantra 3
दुर्हार्दः संघोरं चक्षुः पापकृत्वानमागमम्। तांस्त्वं सहस्रचक्षो प्रतीबोधेन नाशय परिपाणोऽसि जङ्गिडः
The grievous, the most dreadful Eye, the evil-working that hath come upon (us)—those, O thousand-eyed, destroy by thy wakeful counter-guard: thou art the paripāṇa, O Jāṅgiḍa.
Mantra 4
परि मा दिवः परि मा पृथिव्याः पर्यन्तरिक्षात् परि मा वीरुद्भ्यः । परि मा भूतात् परि मोत भव्याद् दिशोदिशो जङ्गिडः पात्वस्मान्
Round about me—from heaven, round about me—from earth; from the mid-air round about me, round about me—from the plants. Round about me—from beings, and further—from what shall be: from every quarter let the Jangida guard us.
Mantra 5
य ऋष्णवो देवकृता य उतो ववृतेऽन्यः । सर्वांस्तान् विश्वभेषजोऽरसां जङ्गिडस्करत्
What hurtful powers are god-wrought, and what other hath arisen besides—of all those the Jangida, the universal medicine, hath made them sapless, void of force.
Jāṅgiḍa is treated as a medicinal plant-power and also as an amulet (paripāṇa). The hymn personifies it as a vigilant protector that can be tied on or placed to guard a person or home.
It is aimed at removing hostile influences such as viṣkandha-type affliction and the ‘evil eye’ (harmful gaze/attention). It also functions preventively by building an all-around protective enclosure across realms and directions.
The protection is ‘round about’—from heaven, earth, mid-air, plants, beings, and even what is yet to come—then sealed from every quarter (diśo-diśaḥ). This creates the sense of a complete boundary with no opening for harm.
