Linga/Saguna Shiva worship is fundamentally an offering (upacāra) of mind, speech, and song; the verse sets a narrative contrast—true worship is to please Shiva, not to win over another devotee.
Practice kīrtana or japa (especially the Panchākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with inner restraint—pair it with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and steady breath to keep devotion free from pride.
