Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Type: rudram
Role: teaching
It maps Shiva’s supreme reality through sacred aspects—Īśāna (sovereign head), Aghora (purifying heart), and Vāma (inner mystery)—showing how the one Pati (Lord) is contemplated through distinct divine powers while remaining the ancient Puruṣa.
In Linga-worship, devotees approach the Nirguna beyond form through Saguna contemplations; this verse supports that method by giving precise “loci” for meditation—crown, heart, and hidden aspect—so the mind can steadily adore Maheśvara without reducing Him to a merely material form.
A dhyāna practice: visualize Shiva as Puruṣa-Maheśvara, placing Īśāna at the crown, Aghora in the heart, and Vāma as the subtle inner power; accompany it with japa of the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to stabilize devotion and insight.
