It praises the Shaiva ideal of harmonizing right knowledge (Veda–Vedānta) with right conduct (generosity and honourable living), showing that true merit ripens into good fame and supports the soul’s onward movement toward Shiva’s grace.
In the Shiva Purana, learning and Vedāntic discernment are meant to culminate in devotion to Saguna Shiva (Linga-worship) as a disciplined, dharmic life that makes one fit for Shiva’s anugraha (grace).
The verse implies disciplined study and dharmic charity; as a Shaiva takeaway, one may pair daily Shiva-pūjā with japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and acts of dāna (giving) done in a sattvic spirit.
