Sukta 8.95

Devata

Indra

Inside Sukta 95

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by drawing Indra near: the bright Soma pressings ‘flow’ to him and he is urged to drink what is set out in the sacrificer’s activities.

  2. Development

Praise and solemn utterance are presented as forces that build Indra up; the worshippers seek to win and possess his many ‘man-powers’ for victory and well-being.

  3. Climax

The declaration of Indra as ‘śuddha’ (pure/clarified) intensifies the vision: in purity he grants wealth and treasures, and in purity he smites Vṛtra-like obstacles and awakens vāja.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves in confident petition—having invoked, praised, and ‘strengthened’ Indra through Soma and speech, the poets rest their hope on his purified power to secure abundance and triumph.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the gīrvāṇa (lover of chants), the foremost receiver of Soma, and the heroic slayer of Vṛtra and other obstructions. He is praised as the giver of rayi (wealth/plenitude) and ratna (treasures) to the dāśuṣ (the offering worshipper), and as the awakener of vāja—victorious energy.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases and sets in motion the blocked powers (waters, light, vitality) by shattering constraint; he sustains the order of effective action by granting strength, victory, and abundance to those aligned with ṛta through sacrifice.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the illumined will and courageous force in the human being: the power that drinks the ‘Soma’ of clarified inspiration, breaks inner resistance (vṛtra), and establishes energetic mastery (vāja) across one’s works.
