The Narration of the Trayodaśī Vow Observed Throughout the Twelve Months
गृहद्वारे बहिर्दद्याद्यमो मे प्रीयतामिति । एवं कृते तु विप्रेंद्र यमपीडा न जायते ॥ ४७ ॥
gṛhadvāre bahirdadyādyamo me prīyatāmiti | evaṃ kṛte tu vipreṃdra yamapīḍā na jāyate || 47 ||
Di luar ambang pintu rumah, letakkan persembahan sambil berkata, “Semoga Yama berkenan kepadaku”; bila dilakukan demikian, wahai brahmana utama, siksaan Yama tidak timbul.
Narada (in instruction to a Brahmin interlocutor, within the Narada–Sanatkumara teaching stream)
Vrata: Ūrja (Kārttika) trayodaśī-associated threshold offering to Yama (protective rite)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
It teaches a simple dharmic rite—an offering made at the threshold with an explicit intention—to reduce karmic consequences associated with Yama, symbolizing mitigation of post-death suffering through prescribed righteous action.
While not directly a Vishnu-bhakti verse, it reflects the Purāṇic principle that sincere intention (saṅkalpa) and faith expressed through ritual acts can transform one’s destiny; in the broader Narada Purana ethos, such discipline supports a life oriented toward devotion and dharma.
It highlights practical ritual procedure (kalpa-style application): where to place the offering (outside the doorway) and the accompanying formula of intention (“yamo me prīyatām”), emphasizing correct performance and speech in rite.
