Shloka 49

Karṇa’s advance against the Pāṇḍava host; Arjuna’s clash with the Saṃśaptakas (कर्णस्य पाण्डवसेनाप्रवेशः—अर्जुनस्य संशप्तकसंप्रहारः)

तपोविशेषैर्विविधैयोंगं यो वेद चात्मन: | यः सांख्यमात्मनो वेत्ति यस्य चात्मा वशे सदा

tapo-viśeṣair vividhair yogaṃ yo veda cātmanaḥ | yaḥ sāṅkhyam ātmano vetti yasya cātmā vaśe sadā ||

Duryodhana berkata: “Ia yang melalui beragam tapa-pertapaan yang khas memahami disiplin yoga yang berkenaan dengan diri; ia yang mengerti Sāṅkhya yang berkenaan dengan diri; dan ia yang batinnya senantiasa terkendali—dialah yang teguh dalam tapa yang dahsyat dan dalam laku pengekangan tertinggi. Kami mendengar bahwa pada masa itu para dewa menaklukkan para Dānava. Setelah para Dānava dikalahkan, tiga putra Tārakāsura—Tārākṣa, Kamalākṣa, dan Vidyunmālī—berlindung pada pertapaan yang keras dan mulai menjalankan kaul-kaul yang utama. Dengan berbagai tapa mereka mengetahui cara menahan seluruh gerak-batin; senantiasa terjaga dalam pengetahuan akan hakikat diri; dan menguasai seluruh daya batin—mereka pun menjadi tiada banding di dunia.
