Freedom from sloth, steadfastness in dharma, and commitment to right conduct—practiced in proportion to one’s capacity—together with clear discernment, make a person qualified for the highest spiritual attainment (brahmabhūya).
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction-oriented setting, Maheśvara states a general principle of spiritual progress: ethical discipline and wise effort, rather than mere status or ritual alone, are presented as the pathway that prepares one for realization of Brahman.
