FAQs

It teaches anna-śuddhi (sanctifying food) by mantra-prayoga: touching the food with the thumb while invoking Viṣṇu, then reciting the Gāyatrī with vyāhṛtis and the “madhuvātāḥ” ṛk as a consecratory formula.

Alongside theology, the Agni Purāṇa preserves practical domestic-ritual procedure—specific gestures (aṅguṣṭha-nyāsa) and exact mantra sequences—showing its coverage of lived religious practice, not only narratives.

By identifying the food with Viṣṇu and purifying it through Vedic mantras, the act of eating is framed as a sacred, merit-bearing (puṇya) and purificatory (śuddhi) practice rather than mere consumption.
