Description of Jambūdvīpa: its regions, mountains, measurements, and cosmic structure
mahāvarṣāṇi khyātāni catvāry atra ca saṁsthitāḥ | tatra parvatasaṁsthāno merur nāma mahābalaḥ || 75.50 ||
Varāha
It reflects Purāṇic cosmography by organizing the world into major regions (mahāvarṣas) and placing Mount Meru as a central geographic-cosmic reference point in the narrative tradition.
Meru is identified as the central cosmic mountain of Purāṇic geography; modern scholarship generally treats it as a mythic-cosmological axis rather than a single, securely identifiable physical mountain.
The verse primarily conveys a descriptive cosmological framework rather than a direct ethical injunction; its philosophical value lies in presenting an ordered vision of the world that later passages often connect to cultural geography and stewardship themes.
