The Birth of the Nāgas, Brahmā’s Curse, and the Pañcamī Observance
एवं शापं तु ते लब्ध्वा प्रसादं च चतुर्मुखात् । तस्थुः पातालनिलये मुदितेनान्तरात्मना ॥ २४.३१ ॥
evaṃ śāpaṃ tu te labdhvā prasādaṃ ca caturmukhāt | tasthuḥ pātālanilaye muditenāntarātmanā || 24.31 ||
उनको शाप तो मिला ही, ब्रह्मा ने उनपर मेहरबानी भी की। इसलिए वो पाताल लोक में रहने लगे। दिल में खुश थे वो लोग।
Varāha (default dialogue framework)
It reflects a common Purāṇic narrative structure where moral causality is expressed through śāpa (curse) and prasāda (favor), and it situates the story within a layered cosmography that includes Pātāla as a recognized mythic-geographic realm.
Pātāla is identified as the subterranean realm in Purāṇic cosmography; it is not a single modern-mappable site, but a conceptual “netherworld” location used to organize mythic geography and cosmological space.
The verse emphasizes the coexistence of consequence and mitigation—actions may yield restrictive outcomes (śāpa), yet reconciliation or relief (prasāda) can also occur, framing an ethical logic of accountability alongside restoration.
