Description of the Māhātmya of Gokarṇeśvara and Jaleśvara (Śaileśvara) in the Śleṣmātaka Forest
bhṛgumūle paraṃ tīrthaṃ brahmaṇā nirmitaṃ svayam || brahmodbhedeti vikhyātaṃ tasyāpi śṛṇu yatphalam ||
Varāha (default, instructor voice)
The attribution of a tīrtha’s origin to Brahmā exemplifies Purāṇic strategies for legitimizing pilgrimage landscapes by anchoring them in cosmological and mythic authority.
‘Bhṛgumūla’ and the tīrtha-name ‘Brahmodbheda’ are given; the excerpt does not specify a region, so modern identification requires comparative toponymy across Purāṇic and local traditions.
The verse primarily introduces a site and its promised ‘fruit’; the ethical layer is implicit in the broader tīrtha framework of disciplined pilgrimage and listening (śravaṇa) to sacred instruction.
