Description of the Māhātmya of Gokarṇeśvara and Jaleśvara (Śaileśvara) in the Śleṣmātaka Forest
atha gokarṇeśvarajaleśvaramāhātmyavarṇanam || brahmovāca || tataḥ śakraḥ suragaṇaiḥ saha sarvaiḥ sametya ca || buddhiṁ cakāra gamane mārgituṁ yatra śaṅkaraḥ
Brahmā
It is a formal māhātmya heading and narrative transition, signaling a site-focused section that often preserves early pilgrimage traditions and localized sacred memory.
Gokarṇeśvara is explicitly named (commonly associated with Gokarṇa on India’s western coast in modern identification). Jaleśvara is named as a paired sacred site, though its precise identification can vary by regional tradition.
Collective deliberation and purposeful action are emphasized: the gods assemble and decide to seek Śaṅkara rather than act impulsively.
