Description of the Torments within the Cycle of Rebirth: Hymn to Yama and the Introduction to Citragupta’s Administration
rudanti karuṇaṃ ghoraṃ trātāraṃ nāpnuvanti te || narake 'pi tathā pūrṇe hy agādhe tamasāvṛte
Varāha (default attribution within Varāha–Pṛthivī dialogue framework)
The verse exemplifies Purāṇic moral pedagogy: the absence of a ‘rescuer’ underscores personal responsibility and the narrative logic of karmic consequence.
No terrestrial location is specified; the verse situates the scene within an otherworldly ‘naraka’ setting described as dark and unfathomable.
It stresses the inevitability of consequences for harmful actions and the insufficiency of external rescue once consequences are said to mature.
