Mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | etan me kathitaṃ pūrvaṃ brahmaputreṇa dhīmatā | sanakānu-jena viprarṣe brāhmaṇān śṛṇu sāmpratam || 14.1 ||
Mārkaṇḍeya
It functions as a formal framing device typical of Purāṇic literature, grounding the discourse in a lineage of transmission (guru–śiṣya/ṛṣi-paramparā) to signal authority and continuity of the narrative.
No geographic location is explicitly identified in this verse; it primarily establishes speaker, prior source, and the immediate topic focus.
The verse does not present a direct ethical injunction; its philosophical instruction is methodological—emphasizing attentive listening and the careful relay of received tradition.
