Hospitality at Gauramukha’s Hermitage and the Power of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel
cintāmaṇim imaṃ cāsya harāmīti vicintya saḥ | prayāṇaṃ nodayāmāsa sa rājāśramabāhyataḥ | āśramasya bahirgatvā nātidūre savāhanaḥ || 11.66 ||
Varāha (default narrator-instructor framework; explicit speaker not stated in verse fragment)
It exemplifies a common Purāṇic narrative device: a royal figure’s internal deliberation and subsequent action, used to frame ethical reflection on desire, possession, and conduct within culturally significant spaces such as hermitages.
No specific toponym is given in this verse; the identifiable setting is an āśrama (hermitage), a culturally meaningful landscape type in Sanskrit literature rather than a uniquely named site.
The verse foregrounds intention (vicintya) preceding action, highlighting how covetous resolve—here, the decision to take another’s valued object—functions as the moral pivot in the narrative.
