ब्राह्मक्षत्रियवैश्यशूद्रा इति चत्वारो वर्णाः । तेषां वर्णानां ब्राह्मण एव प्रधान इति वेदवचनानुरूपं स्मृतिभिरप्युक्तम् । तत्र चोद्यमस्ति—को वा ब्राह्मणो नाम? किं जीवः? किं देहः? किं जातिः? किं ज्ञानम्? किं कर्म? किं धार्मिक इति ॥ २॥
ब्राह्म-क्षत्रिय-वैश्य-शूद्राः । इति । चत्वारः । वर्णाः । तेषाम् । वर्णानाम् । ब्राह्मणः । एव । प्रधानः । इति । वेद-वचन-अनुरूपम् । स्मृतिभिः । अपि । उक्तम् । तत्र । चोद्यम् । अस्ति । कः । वा । ब्राह्मणः । नाम । किम् । जीवः । किम् । देहः । किम् । जातिः । किम् । ज्ञानम् । किम् । कर्म । किम् । धार्मिकः । इति ॥ २॥
brāhmakṣatriyavaiśyaśūdrā iti catvāro varṇāḥ | teṣāṁ varṇānāṁ brāhmaṇa eva pradhāna iti vedavacanānurūpaṁ smṛtibhir apy uktam | tatra codyam asti—ko vā brāhmaṇo nāma? kiṁ jīvaḥ? kiṁ dehaḥ? kiṁ jātiḥ? kiṁ jñānam? kiṁ karma? kiṁ dhārmika iti || 2 ||
ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य, शूद्र, यह चार जात हैं। वेद और पुरानी किताबों में लिखा है कि ब्राह्मण सबसे बड़ा है। लेकिन अब सवाल यह है कि आखिर ब्राह्मण का मतलब क्या है? क्या यह जान है, शरीर है, जनम है, ज्ञान है, करम है, या धरम?
‘Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya, and Śūdra’—thus there are four social classes. Among these classes, that the Brāhmaṇa alone is primary is stated in accordance with Vedic utterance and is also said in the Smṛtis. Here, however, an inquiry arises: Who indeed is called a Brāhmaṇa—(is it) the individual soul? the body? birth? knowledge? action? or the righteous person?
