From the knowledge arising from the collection of Vedānta statements, it shines as the inner Self. (It is spoken of as) pure—namely, the consciousness of Īśvara and also the consciousness of the jīva; and as the knower, the means of knowledge, the object of knowledge, and likewise the result. Thus it is said to be sevenfold, differentiated only in empirical transaction. That which is free from the limiting adjunct of māyā is called ‘pure’. Through relation with māyā, (it is called) Īśvara; and the jīva is (so called) as being under the control of avidyā. Through relation with the inner instrument it is termed ‘knower’; through relation with its mental modification it is called ‘means of knowledge’. Consciousness, though unknown, is called ‘object of knowledge’; and consciousness, when known, is called ‘result’.

Sevenfold functional differentiation of one consciousness (caitanya) via upādhis; māyā/avidyā; pramātṛ-pramāṇa-prameya-phala schema; vyavahāra vs paramārthaMahavakya: Clarifies how ‘तत् त्वम् असि’ (Tat tvam asi) is possible: the same consciousness appears as Īśvara (‘tat’) and jīva (‘tvam’) through different upādhis; removing upādhis reveals identity.YajurChandas: Mixed/irregular (didactic śloka-style; not strict Vedic meter)
