‘Oṃ’—the one-syllabled Brahman—is to be meditated upon by all seekers of liberation. Earth, fire, the Ṛgveda, and the utterance ‘bhūḥ’—these indeed (belong to) Pitāmaha (Brahmā). When, in the first portion of the praṇava, dissolution is attained in the letter ‘a’, (there are) the midspace, the Yajus, wind, and ‘bhuvaḥ’—(and) Viṣṇu Janārdana. When, in the second portion of the praṇava, dissolution is attained in the letter ‘u’, (there are) heaven, the sun, the Sāmaveda, and ‘svaḥ’—(and) Maheśvara. When, in the third portion of the praṇava, dissolution is attained in the letter ‘m’… The letter ‘a’ is said to be yellow and is declared to be rajas; the letter ‘u’ is sāttvika, white; the letter ‘m’ is black, tāmasa. (The praṇava is) eight-limbed, four-footed, three-stationed, and having five deities. He who does not know the Oṅkāra does not become (a knower) of Brahman. The praṇava is the bow; the Self is the arrow; Brahman is said to be its target. It should be pierced by one who is vigilant; becoming like the arrow, one becomes of Its nature. All actions cease when That—higher and lower—is seen.
