‘Om’—the one-syllabled Brahman—should be meditated upon by all seekers of liberation. Earth, fire, and the Ṛgveda are (denoted by) ‘bhūḥ’; indeed (this is) the Creator. When dissolution is attained in ‘a’, the first portion of the praṇava, (there are) the mid-space, the Yajurveda, wind, ‘bhuvaḥ’, and Viṣṇu Janārdana. When dissolution is attained in ‘u’, the second portion of the praṇava, (there are) heaven, the sun, the Sāmaveda, ‘svaḥ’, and Maheśvara. When dissolution is attained in ‘m’, the third portion of the praṇava, ‘a’ is said to be yellow and rajas; ‘u’ is sāttvic and white; ‘m’ is black and tāmasic. (The praṇava is) eight-limbed, four-footed, three-stationed, and having five deities. He who does not know oṅkāra does not become (a knower) of Brahman. The praṇava is the bow; the self is the arrow; Brahman is said to be the target. It should be pierced by one who is not negligent; like an arrow one becomes of That. All actions cease when that Supreme-and-immanent Reality is seen.
