Inside Khanda 2.4

Key teachings

  • • The fivefold Sāman is symbolically identified with the cosmic water-cycle: cloud (Hinkāra), rain (Prastāva), eastward rivers (Udgītha), westward rivers (Pratihāra), ocean (Nidhana). • This Upāsanā reveals the unity of Vedic chant and natural phenomena. • Meditating thus grants safety from death in water and abundance of water. • The ocean represents the final dissolution (Nidhana), mirroring the return of all sound to silence. • The eastward and westward flowing rivers correspond to the two complementary limbs of the chant, showing cosmic polarity.
