Sukta 9.86
त्वां सोम पवमानं स्वाध्योऽनु विप्रासो अमदन्नवस्यवः । त्वां सुपर्ण आभरद्दिवस्परीन्दो विश्वाभिर्मतिभिः परिष्कृतम् ॥
tvā́ṃ soma pavamānaṃ svādhyò ’nú viprā́so amadan avasyávaḥ | tvā́ṃ supárṇa ā́bharad divás párīndo víśvābhir matíbhiḥ páriṣkṛtam ||
Seers follow and rejoice in Soma Pavamāna, the self-ruled; the fair-winged bird brings him from beyond heaven, perfected by all thoughts.
The purified bliss (Soma), self-governed (svādhyaḥ: moving by its own law), becomes the object of the seeker’s following—aspiration tracks the subtle descent of Ananda. ‘Suparṇa’ (fair-winged) is the swift ascending-descending power of consciousness (often the eagle of inspiration) that brings the Soma from supramental heights (“beyond heaven”) into the mind-life. When received and ‘perfected by all thoughts’ (viśvābhir matibhiḥ pariṣkṛtam), the whole mental instrumentation participates—thoughts become harmonized, refined, and turned into channels for delight-truth.
Higher joy and truth descend when consciousness becomes self-ruled and aspiration follows steadily; integrated thinking (not scattered) refines and stabilizes the descent of inspiration.
Soma-ritual, Soma brought from heaven, Seers’ delight (mad), Perfection through inspiration
The verse is a classic Aurobindonian ‘descent’ statement: Soma brought from beyond heaven by Suparṇa—symbol of inspiration bridging planes—then stabilized by the mind’s purified formations.
Mediator of heavenly essence into the sacrifice; inspirer of ecstasy and right formation of thought.
Descending Ananda that organizes the mind into a coherent vessel for truth.
Pavamāna stotra in Soma-yajña; praise during filtration/collection

4 × ~12 syllables
Expansive and stately; supports the feeling of descent from ‘beyond heaven’.
Creates uplift then settling—good for receiving inspiration and letting it pervade the mind.
Praise of Soma’s descent from heaven and its perfection through hymns/thoughts—used in Pavamāna sequences
During Soma pressing/chant cycles associated with purification.
Chant as Soma is filtered; invite Soma’s descent and perfection.
Before meditation or creative work: chant to invite ‘higher inspiration’ and then sit quietly to let thoughts become orderly and luminous.
svādhyá ‘self-ruled’ (su- + ādhya) indicates inner autonomy/mastery—Soma as a self-governing power of truth. suparṇa ‘fair-winged’ evokes the eagle/bird myth of Soma’s heavenly origin; √bhṛ ‘to bear’ is IE (cf. Lat. ferre). pari-√kṛ ‘to make around/complete’ gives ‘refined/perfected’, aligning with pavamāna’s purification theme.
self-mastery (svādhyá), descent of higher essence into human field, collective perfection by thought (mati)
Svādhyaḥ implies action by inner law—Ṛta working within consciousness.
‘Perfected by all thoughts’ indicates Satya taking form in purified mental formations.
Descent motif: essence brought from higher worlds into the human sacrifice.
Integral-psychological: inspiration as supramental gift stabilized by mental purification.
Inspiration (suparṇa) carries higher delight-truth from above-mind into the purified thinking faculty.
Receive ‘Soma’ as descending sweetness from above the head into the mind-heart; let it organize thought into a single intention.
Sahasrāra/Ājñā axis (descent of inspiration into vision)
Inhale imagining descent from above; exhale spreading through the head and chest; gentle kumbhaka if natural.
Receptive, inspired, quietly joyful.
Chant, then pause: notice the subtlest ‘arrival’ of calm delight; allow thoughts to align around one luminous aim rather than multiplying.
Udatta/anudatta/svarita per Śākala accents (requires svara-text for exact pitch sequence).
Keep ‘tvāṃ’ clearly long; preserve consonant clusters in svādhyo; avoid flattening the cadence across pāda breaks.
svādhyo: pronounce ‘svā’ with clear long ā; ‘dhyo’ as a tight cluster., suparṇa: retroflex not needed; keep ‘rṇ’ conjunct crisp., pariṣkṛtam: articulate ṣkṛ with a brief stop, not ‘pariskritam’.
Uplifted, smooth, slightly airy to match the bird/descent imagery.
