We have come to the most Vṛtra-slaying, the eldest Agni, ancient yet new; whose vast far-hearing force grows in the forefront.
The seeker approaches Agni as the supreme breaker of obstruction (vṛtrahantama). Though Agni is ‘eldest’ (jyeṣṭha)—the primal will in creation—he is also ever ‘new’ (ānavam): each awakening is fresh. His ‘far-hearing’ (śrutarvā) is the subtle receptivity of the inner flame that listens beyond surface mind, and his ‘vast’ power (bṛhat) increases in the front of the being (anīke): the leading edge of manifestation where choices and actions form. When Agni grows there, he becomes the effective warrior against the coverer in daily life.
True transformation needs an ever-renewed inner fire that both hears the deeper truth and acts decisively against resistance; the oldest divine principle becomes new each time it leads our front-consciousness.
obstacle-removal, kindling, primordial Agni, victory
A mantra of approach and consecration: the aspirant ‘comes’ to Agni not as external fire alone but as the foremost power that slays inner Vṛtra and grows at the front of life.
First priest and first power of manifestation; breaker of obstructions; awakener of the leading edge of evolution.
A will that is both ancient in essence and freshly active; intuitive hearing plus decisive force that clears the path for illumination.
Agni-stuti at the opening/rekindling of rites; also applicable in rites seeking removal of obstacles.
आ । अ॒ग॒न्म॒ । वृ॒त्र॒हन्ऽत॑मम् । ज्येष्ठ॑म् । अ॒ग्निम् । आन॑वम् । यस्य॑ । श्रु॒तर्वा॑ । बृ॒हन् । आ॒र्क्षः । अनी॑के । एध॑ते ॥
ā | aganma | vṛtrahan-tamam | jyeṣṭham | agnim | ānavam | yasya | śrutarvā | bṛhan | ārkṣaḥ | anīke | edhate
Likely Triṣṭubh (heroic cadence; common for Vṛtra-slaying themes)
Probable 4 padas with strong stress on vṛtrahantamam and edhate
Martial and forward-driving; suitable for ‘approach’ and ‘slaying’ imagery.
Energizes the front-being; gives courage to confront resistance and establishes a vigilant inner listening.
Invocation of Agni as remover of obstacles before major offerings; aligns Agni with the victory-function typically prominent in Indra, showing shared ‘obstruction-slaying’ power in the inner rite.
At commencement of sacrifice, or when obstacles are felt in the rite/life.
Approach (upasthāna) and praise while kindling the fire; invoking Agni’s obstacle-breaking power.
Use before difficult conversations/tasks: ‘come to’ the inner fire, ask it to grow in the forefront (anīke) so speech and action are guided.
vṛtra-han from vṛtra ‘obstruction/covering’ (√vṛ ‘cover’) + √han ‘strike, slay’ (PIE *gʷhen- ‘strike’). jyeṣṭha ‘eldest’ from √jyā/√ji ‘be stronger’ (superlative formation). edhate from √edh ‘kindle, prosper’. anīka ‘face/front’ marks the ‘forepart’ where power becomes manifest.
vṛtra as inner obstruction/ignorance, bṛhat (vastness) as expansion of consciousness, front of manifestation (anīka)
When Vṛtra is slain, the rivers/rays of right movement can flow; Agni restores the evolutionary order.
Śrutarvā: hearing the truth from beyond surface mind; acting from that truth in the front.
The oldest fire reappears as new in each cycle—perennial renewal of manifestation.
Integral Vedic psychology: obstruction in the subconscient must be broken so higher consciousness can lead embodied life.
dawn or rite-beginning (implied by approach/kindling)
Fire growing in the ‘front’ = awakened will governing outward life; Vṛtra = inert blockage; far-hearing = intuitive receptivity.
Establish Agni at the ‘front’—bring the will into the forefront of attention so it governs speech and action; invoke it to break the coverer.
manipura (will-force)
3 rounds: inhale ‘ā aganma’ (approach), hold 1–2 seconds on ‘vṛtrahantamam’ (resolve), exhale on ‘edhate’ (let it grow).
From passive reactivity to active, luminous will with intuitive listening.
Stand or sit upright; feel the ‘front’ of the body (sternum/solar plexus) as the anīka. Recite once with firmness, then silently watch for the next right action arising from deeper hearing.
Keep a strong, steady recitation; rise slightly on ‘vṛtrahantamam’ and anchor on ‘agnim’. Exact udatta/anudatta/svarita requires a svara-marked recension.
Emphasize ‘vṛtrahantamam’ and ‘jyeṣṭham’; pause after |; give ‘edhate’ a concluding lift of increase.
āganma: long ‘ā’; ‘gm’ cluster smooth, vṛtrahan-: vocalic ‘ṛ’; dental ‘t’; avoid inserting extra vowel, jyeṣṭham: conjunct ‘jy’; retroflex ‘ṣṭh’ clear, ānavam: long ‘ā’, śrutarvā: palatal ‘ś’; roll/tap ‘r’, anīke: long ‘ī’; ‘k’ unaspirated, edhate: aspirated ‘dh’ (d+h), not retroflex
firm, forward, bright
