Sukta 8.13

Devata

Indra

This hymn is an extended Soma-invocation to Indra, praising him as the mighty Vajrin who comes to the pressed Soma and makes the worshiper’s kratu (will, resolve, inspired intelligence) clear and effective for the hymn. It repeatedly links Indra’s “many-colored helps” (citrā ūtayaḥ) with growth: strengthening the inner earth-like powers, enlarging capacity, and making praise itself increase in response.

Inside Sukta 13

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is invoked in the pressed Somes as the purifier of kratu fit for the hymn—he makes intention luminous and effective (RV 8.13.1).

  2. Development

The hymn expands Indra’s aids as dynamic forces that increase inner and outer powers; the seers’ aspiration (avasyavaḥ) and Indra’s forward-driving help are portrayed as growth like wings for flight (RV 8.13.17).

  3. Climax

Indra is celebrated as the potent Bull with manifold helps, the one who actively responds to and amplifies the stuti—praise becomes power when met by Indra’s presence.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with a strong, repeated call to the mighty Vajrin, affirming that the invocation itself is potent and that Indra increases the answering praise (RV 8.13.33).

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as vṛṣan (the Bull, overflowing strength), vajrin (wielder of the thunderbolt), and the foremost recipient of Soma, who empowers the hymn and the sacrificer’s intention. He is approached through praise (uktha/stuti) and invoked for his swift, forward-driving aids (pravatvatī ūtayaḥ).
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta through victory over obstruction; releaser of powers (waters, light, expansive energies), and increaser of strength and breadth in the worlds and in the community of worship.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened force of initiative and victorious clarity in the seeker—will-power (kratu) purified by Soma, breaking inner resistance and enabling inspired speech to become effective action.

  • Liturgical Indra-Soma stotras used in Soma rites (as a genre-characteristic of Maṇḍala 8).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the ritual ground and kindle the sacred fires (Āhavanīya, etc.).
  • Press Soma (suta) and strain it; set it for offering with appropriate cups.
  • Recite the hymn as Indra-invocation while presenting Soma, aligning the sacrificer’s kratu with the uktha (praise).
  • Offer Soma libations into the fire (or present in Soma-cups per rite), calling Indra with epithets like vajrin and vṛṣan.

  • Ghee/clarified butter (common ancillary offering)
  • Oblations accompanying praise (mantra-offerings)

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Soma-hymn to Indra, asking him to come to the pressed Soma, purify the worshiper’s will (kratu), and grant strengthening help that makes praise and power grow.

Because Indra is invoked as the foremost drinker of Soma; Soma symbolizes the energizing, clarifying force that supports inspired speech and victorious action.

It means the hymn presents worship as reciprocal: when the sacrificer praises sincerely, Indra responds by intensifying inspiration, confidence, and the effectiveness of the prayer itself.
