Indra (Soma-seeker; bull of the peoples)
Triṣṭubh
This hymn urges the Adhvaryu priests to offer the ruddy, milked Soma to Indra, portrayed as the ever-returning seeker of the pressed draught and the bull-leader of the peoples. It then turns to Indra’s martial aid—overcoming self-styled “great” opponents—and culminates in a joint appeal to Indra and Bṛhaspati for wealth (rayi), fame, and enduring well-being (svasti).

Mantra 1
अध्वर्यवोऽरुणं दुग्धमंशुं जुहोतन वृषभाय क्षितीनाम् । गौराद्वेदीयाँ अवपानमिन्द्रो विश्वाहेद्याति सुतसोममिच्छन् ॥
अध्वर्यु लोग, सोम का रस निकाल के इंद्र को चढ़ाओ। इंद्र सबके लिए बैल जैसा मज़बूत है। वो सोम के पानी को ढूंढते हुए आता है। रोज़ यहाँ आता है सोम पीने के लिए।

यद्दधिषे प्रदिवि चार्वन्नं दिवेदिवे पीतिमिदस्य वक्षि । उत हृदोत मनसा जुषाण उशन्निन्द्र प्रस्थितान्पाहि सोमान् ॥
जब तुम आसमान में अच्छा खाना रख देते हो और रोज़ पीने का काम करते हो, तब इंद्र खुश हो के आता है। अपने दिल और दिमाग से वो सोम की रक्षा करता है। वो सोम जो तैयार किया गया है।

जज्ञानः सोमं सहसे पपाथ प्र ते माता महिमानमुवाच । एन्द्र पप्राथोर्वन्तरिक्षं युधा देवेभ्यो वरिवश्चकर्थ ॥
इंद्र, तुमने सोम पिया है ताकि तुम्हे ताकत मिले। तुम्हारी माँ ने तुम्हारी बड़ाई सबको बतायी है। तुमने आसमान को फैला दिया है। लड़ाई करके तुमने भगवानों के लिए जगह बना दी है।

यद्योधया महतो मन्यमानान्त्साक्षाम तान्बाहुभिः शाशदानान् । यद्वा नृभिर्वृत इन्द्राभियुध्यास्तं त्वयाजिं सौश्रवसं जयेम ॥
जब तुम बड़े लोगों को लड़ाई में भागते हो जो खुद को बहुत समझते हैं, हम उनका सामना करते हैं। जब तुम लोगों के साथ लड़ते हो, तब हम तुम्हारे साथ जीतना चाहते हैं। अच्छी बदनामी आती है जब हम तुम्हारे जैसा बन जाते हैं।

प्रेन्द्रस्य वोचं प्रथमा कृतानि प्र नूतना मघवा या चकार । यदेददेवीरसहिष्ट माया अथाभवत्केवलः सोमो अस्य ॥
मैं इंद्र के पुराने काम बताता हूँ और वो नए काम जो उसने किए हैं। बुरी ताकतें उसकी हरकतों के सामने नहीं टिक पायी। फिर सोम सिर्फ उसका हो गया, सिर्फ उसके पास रहा।

तवेदं विश्वमभितः पशव्यं यत्पश्यसि चक्षसा सूर्यस्य । गवामसि गोपतिरेक इन्द्र भक्षीमहि ते प्रयतस्य वस्वः ॥
यह सब कुछ तुम्हारा है जो तुम सूरज की आँख से देख सकते हो। तुम गायों के एक ही मालिक हो, इंद्र। जो दान दिया जाता है, उसमें हम भी हिस्सा पाएँ।

बृहस्पते युवमिन्द्रश्च वस्वो दिव्यस्येशाथे उत पार्थिवस्य । धत्तं रयिं स्तुवते कीरये चिद्यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
बृहस्पति और इंद्र, तुम दोनों आसमान और दुनिया दौलत के मालिक हो। जो लोग तुम्हारी तारीफ करते हैं, उनको दान दो। तुम दोनों हमेशा हमारी हिफाजत करो और हमें ठीक रखो।
