This short Vasiṣṭha hymn is an invitation to Vāyu to come swiftly with his many niyuts (yoked teams), take his seat at the sacrifice, and drink the Soma as the “first-drinker.” It repeatedly links Vāyu’s arrival and exhilaration with tangible blessings—wealth, strength/heroic power, cattle, horses, and ongoing protection through svasti (well-being). The purpose is both liturgical (calling the deity to the pressing) and pragmatic (securing prosperity and safety for the worshippers).

आ वायो भूष शुचिपा उप नः सहस्रं ते नियुतो विश्ववार । उपो ते अन्धो मद्यमयामि यस्य देव दधिषे पूर्वपेयम् ॥
हे वायु, आजा और हमारे पास आ के बैठ। तू बिल्कुल साफ है, कोई मैला नहीं। तेरे पास हज़ारों ताकतें हैं, तू सब का भला करता है। मैं तेरे लिए सोम रस लाया हूँ जो खुशी देता है। भगवान, तूने पहले इसको पिया था, सबसे पहले।

प्र सोता जीरो अध्वरेष्वस्थात्सोममिन्द्राय वायवे पिबध्यै । प्र यद्वां मध्वो अग्रियं भरन्त्यध्वर्यवो देवयन्तः शचीभिः ॥
पंडित जल्दी से यज्ञ के अंदर खड़ा हो गया। वो चाहता है कि इंद्र और वायु सोम रस पियें। यज्ञ करने वाले लोग भगवान के लिए मीठा रस ले कर आए हैं। वो अपनी कला से सबसे पहला रस दोनों के लिए लाए हैं।

प्र याभिर्यासि दाश्वांसमच्छा नियुद्भिर्वायविष्टये दुरोणे । नि नो रयिं सुभोजसं युवस्व नि वीरं गव्यमश्व्यं च राधः ॥
वायु, जिन ताकतों से तू भक्त के घर आता है, उन्हीं से हमारे पास भी आ। हमें ऐसा धन दे जिससे हम खुश रहें। हमारे लिए बहादुरी ला, गाय और घोड़े ला, यह सब तेरा देना है।

ये वायव इन्द्रमादनास आदेवासो नितोशनासो अर्यः । घ्नन्तो वृत्राणि सूरिभिः ष्याम सासह्वांसो युधा नृभिरमित्रान् ॥
वायु की ताकतें इंद्र के साथ खुश रहती हैं। वो भगवान की तरफ बढ़ते हैं, आगे बढ़ते हैं। हम भी अपने अच्छे लोगों के साथ दुश्मनों को हरा दें। हम जंग में जीत के दुश्मनों को पीछे छोड़ दें।

आ नो नियुद्भिः शतिनीभिरध्वरं सहस्रिणीभिरुप याहि यज्ञम् । वायो अस्मिन्त्सवने मादयस्व यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
वायु, सौ-सौ और हज़ार-हज़ार ताकतों के साथ हमारे पास आ। यज्ञ के काम के पास आ जा। इस सोम रस में खुश हो जा। तुम हमेशा हमारे लिए अच्छा रखो, हमें सेफ रखो।
