Sukta 7.1

Rishi

Vasiṣṭha (traditional attribution for Mandala 7 opening hymns)

Devata

Agni

Chandas

Trishtubh (typical for RV 7.1; verify in critical edition)

RV 7.1 opens Vasiṣṭha’s book by “bringing Agni to birth” from the araṇis and enthroning him as gṛhapati (lord of the home) and priestly mediator for sacrifice. The hymn moves from Agni’s manifest kindling and far-seen radiance to petitions for protection against rākṣasas and hostile forces, ending with a request that Agni uplift the poet’s brahman (sacred utterance) and secure well-being in giving and receiving.

Inside Sukta 1

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is ‘born’ by human effort and inspired intention from the araṇis—praised, far-seen, and installed as lord of the dwelling.

  2. Development

Agni’s priestly identity expands: he is the rite’s center, the mediator of offerings, and the guardian who keeps hostile beings and deceivers away.

  3. Climax

A strong protective appeal: Agni is asked to shield from rākṣasas and harmful, raging forces, and to help the community overcome attackers in conflict.

  4. Where it settles

The poet asks Agni to elevate and set the mantras in motion and to secure lasting svasti—safety and prosperity—especially in acts of giving and reciprocal support.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the kindled fire born from the two araṇis, the praised (praśasta) gṛhapati, and the priestly power that is “seen from afar,” carrying offerings and words to the gods while guarding the sacrificer’s space.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and devas: he receives oblations, conveys them upward, establishes the sacrificial order (ṛta) in the home and altar, and burns away impurity and hostile forces.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened flame of will and discernment: the inner heat that kindles thought into mantra, transforms raw impulse into offering, and protects the mind from deception and destructive tendencies.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha-gotra (Āditya/Manu lineage in later tradition); chief seer of the Vasiṣṭhas in RV Maṇḍala 7 · Foremost among the Seven Ṛṣis in Vedic memory; royal purohita associated with the Bharatas/Tr̥tsus and celebrated for hymns that unify ritual precision with spiritual authority.

Attributes of the deity

  • Born of araṇis (fire-sticks), yet divine
  • Gṛhapati (lord of the dwelling) and household priest
  • Dūredṛśa (visible from afar), radiant guide
  • Rakṣohā (protector from rākṣasas/negativity)
  • Hotṛ/Atharvan-like priestly function: consecrator and guardian
  • Carrier of offerings and messenger to the gods

Also by this seer

  • Primary authorship/traditional attribution of most of Rig Veda Maṇḍala 7 (the Vasiṣṭha family book)
  • Major Agni, Indra, Varuṇa–Mitra, and Soma hymns in RV 7
  • Later Vedic/Itihāsa-Purāṇa tradition connects Vasiṣṭha with the Vasiṣṭha-dharma and royal counsel narratives (traditional, not strictly Rigvedic)

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the altar/hearth and arrange kindling (samidh) and fuel.
  • Generate fire from the two araṇis (symbolic ‘birth’ of Agni) while reciting opening invocations.
  • Install Agni as gṛhapati/hotṛ: seat the fire, feed it, and align the rite with ṛta.
  • Offer oblations with protective petitions (rakṣas-warding) for the sacrificer, household, and rite.
  • Conclude with a request that Agni ‘raise’ the brahman (mantric power) and grant svasti (well-being) in exchange and generosity.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya)
  • Kindling sticks (samidh)
  • Grain/cakes in later aligned practice (contextual)
  • Soma/pressing is not central here but Agni receives preliminary offerings in soma rites

Frequently Asked Questions

It establishes Agni as the newly kindled sacred fire—lord of the home and priest of the sacrifice—and asks him to protect the worshippers and strengthen their mantras.

The two araṇis (fire-sticks) are used to generate fire; the hymn treats this ritual act as a sacred birth, showing Agni as a divine presence awakened through human effort and right intention.

It is a prayer for safety from harmful forces—whether seen as hostile beings, illness, deception, or inner negativity—so the ritual and daily life remain ordered and auspicious.
