RV 5.41 is a wide-ranging prayer that begins by appealing to Mitra–Varuṇa as guardians of Ṛta (cosmic order) to protect the sacrificer and secure strength, prosperity, and safe passage. As the hymn unfolds it expands into an almost “all-powers” invocation—calling on other deities and natural guardians (Waters, Plants, Heaven, forests, mountains) for healing, protection, and well-being—ending with a compact wish for nourishing plenitude to be poured into the worshippers.

Inside Sukta 41

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct question and appeal: who will truly serve Mitra–Varuṇa across the realms, and may they protect us in the seat of Ṛta (RV 5.41.1).

  2. Development

The hymn broadens from the central dyad to a protective canopy of powers—calling for safety, healing, and right guidance, including Waters, Plants, and the great supports of the world (heaven, forests, mountains).

  3. Climax

A comprehensive plea for protection and beneficence—spanning divine, natural, and moral dimensions—so that the community is guarded in body, path, and prosperity (exemplified by the protective catalogue in RV 5.41.11).

  4. Where it settles

A compact closing aspiration that nourishment and forceful plenitude be poured into ‘us’—sealing the hymn as a prayer for sustained vitality and growth (RV 5.41.20).

The deity: Mitra–Varuṇa

  • In the VedaMitra and Varuṇa are paired sovereign powers upholding Ṛta: Mitra embodies harmony, agreement, and right relationship, while Varuṇa embodies vastness, moral oversight, and the binding law that restrains disorder. They are invoked as protectors seated in the realm of Ṛta, capable of guarding the worshipper across heaven and earth.
  • Cosmic functionTo maintain cosmic and social order—stabilizing truth, oath, covenant, and the lawful rhythms of the world—while granting protection, prosperity, and safe movement through peril.
  • Inner significanceThe awakening of conscience and clarity: Mitra as the inner capacity for concord and ethical relation; Varuṇa as the inner witness that binds the mind to truth, discipline, and expansive, fear-dispelling order.

The seer

  • KaṇvaKaṇva (Kāṇva gotra/lineage) · A leading seer-family voice of the Rig Veda, the Kāṇvas are noted for hymns of refined praise and practical prayer—seeking protection, order (Ṛta), and prosperity through precise invocation.
