Sukta 10.14
अङ्गिरसो नः पितरो नवग्वा अथर्वाणो भृगवः सोम्यासः । तेषां वयं सुमतौ यज्ञियानामपि भद्रे सौमनसे स्याम ॥
áṅgiraso naḥ pitáro návagvā átharvāṇo bhṛ́gavaḥ sómyāsaḥ | téṣāṃ vayáṃ sumatáu yajñíyānām ápi bhadré saumanasé syāma ||
Our Fathers are the Angirases, the Navagvas, the Atharvans, the Bhrigus—those who are Soma-joyful. May we be in the good will of these worthy of sacrifice; may we be in a noble harmony of mind.
The ‘Fathers’ are not merely biological ancestors but the foundational seer-forces that opened the path of illumination: Angirases (finders of light), Navagvas (workers of the ninefold rhythm/effort—symbol of disciplined cycles), Atharvans (masters of inner fire and right formulation), Bhrigus (flame-born discerners). ‘Somyāsaḥ’ indicates those who live in the delight of divine bliss (Soma) rather than in mental dryness. The prayer is for sumati (right-mindedness, luminous consent) and bhadra saumanasa (noble harmony of mind): a psyche aligned with ancestral wisdom and capable of receiving Soma-delight.
We inherit inner possibilities from a lineage of realization. When we align with the best in that lineage—disciplined effort, inspired speech, illumined will, and bliss—we enter a harmonious mind and a benevolent guidance in life.
Pitṛs, Spiritual ancestry, Right-mindedness, Soma delight
Enumerates multiple ancient seer-clans, suggesting a conscious appeal to pan-Vedic ancestral lineages rather than a single gotra.
This mantra functions as a bridge from funerary remembrance to living sādhanā: the goal is not only honoring the dead but inheriting the seers’ consciousness—illumination, discipline, protection, and bliss.
Guardians of the ancestral plane; transmitters of realized knowledge and right practice; supporters of the living in the yajña of evolution.
Ancestral guidance as an active influence: it organizes the mind into sumati and saumanasa and opens receptivity to Soma-delight.
Pitṛyajña/śrāddha; remembrance of seer-ancestors; prayer for their favor (sumati).

A litany of names followed by a calm benediction; balances invocation with aspiration.
Creates reverent uplift and then settles into mental harmony—good for closing a rite or meditation.
Ancestor invocation; seeking the Fathers’ favour and inner right-mindedness
Ancestor offerings; also recited as a general lineage-prayer by practitioners seeking guidance.
Name-recitation of ancestral groups; concluding wish for harmony and auspicious mind.
Lineage meditation: invoke the ‘best ancestors’ (inner qualities) before study, chanting, or major life decisions; cultivate saumanasa as mental hygiene.
su-matí ‘good thought’ and su-mánas ‘good mind’ foreground an inner aim: alignment of mentality with the ancestral luminous tradition. sómya ‘Soma-related’ points to delight/immortality as a state of consciousness, not merely drink. The seer-clans function as archetypes of realized forces transmitted as lineage.
lineage as transmission of realization, su-manas / su-mati (right mentality), Soma as bliss-consciousness
Sumati is the mind’s alignment with ṛta; the Pitṛs support that alignment.
Bhadra saumanasa is the mental form of satya—truth expressed as harmony.
Evolution by inheritance: the human journey continues the seers’ conquest of light and delight.
Integral/psychological Veda: Pitṛs as inner formations; Soma as bliss-consciousness rather than only ritual drink.
Fire = aspiration/will; Soma = delight; lineage = continuity of inner gains across time and within the psyche.
Invoke the four ancestral qualities: (1) Angirasa—will to discover light, (2) Navagva—disciplined cycles, (3) Atharvan—protective right formulation, (4) Bhrigu—swift discernment; then rest in Soma-delight.
sahasrara (Soma-delight descending)
Bhrāmarī (soft humming) 5 rounds to induce saumanasa; then silent repetition of the mantra.
Harmonized mind with a subtle sweetness (ānanda) in the background.
Chant 12 times. After each cycle, pause and feel: ‘May my mind consent to the true.’ Conclude by recalling one ancestral virtue you will enact today (discipline, clarity, protection, or joy).
Ṛgvedic accents per Śākala (exact udatta/svarita requires svara-marked text).
Let the name-list be even and reverent; slightly lengthen ‘somyāsaḥ’; soften into a blessing tone on ‘sumatau… saumanase’.
(navagvāḥ): ‘gv’ cluster; long āḥ, (atharvāṇaḥ): ‘th’ aspirated; long ā, (bhṛgavaḥ): vocalic ‘ṛ’ clear; ‘gh’ voiced aspirate, (somyāsaḥ): long ō; ‘myā’ with palatal y, (saumanase): ‘au’ diphthong; light ‘n’
Gentle, reverent, soothing; finish with a quiet downward cadence.
