Indra is the opener of doors; in doorways he is the covering; he holds treasure in the udder; moon-based, increased by ecstasy through sages’ thoughts. I call that Indra with a will for right work and luminous intelligence—most bountiful, filled with Soma-delight.
Indra is both the key and the tested threshold: he opens the inner doors (to higher consciousness) and also stands at the doorways as the ‘covering’ (vavra)—the necessary lid/guard of the secret until the seeker is ready. The ‘udder’ signifies the hidden source of nourishment: the plenitude of light (cows/rays) and energy held back until the right opening. ‘Moon-based’ (candrabudhna) points to reflective luminous mind founded on Soma—inner delight. The sages’ inspired thinking (manīṣā) increases Indra’s force: our clarified thought and right work (svapasyā) invite the illumined Mind to give its richest gifts.
Real openings come with preparedness: discipline and right intention make thresholds become gateways. Joy (inner delight) and clear intelligence together unlock hidden resources.
Opening of gates (inner thresholds), Abundance and nourishment, Indra’s generosity (rāti), Ecstasy increasing power (mada-vṛddha)
Seer of ordered power: hymns often stress right work (ṛta) and the guarded secret that opens by true aspiration.
Vasiṣṭha’s voice here teaches the psychology of initiation: doors open by luminous intelligence and disciplined will, not by impatience.
Lord of openings and releases; bestower of riches (rays, powers, wideness) when the threshold is rightly crossed.
Initiatory intelligence that both guards and unveils; the force that turns aspiration into effective realization.
Indra invocation with Soma; stotra calling the deity for ‘opening’ and gifts

4 pādas of ~11 syllables each
Balanced and declarative; suited to invocation and definition of divine function.
Creates a feeling of approaching a threshold with confidence; supports clear intention and focused calling.
Invocation emphasizing Indra as opener of gates and bestower of abundance; aligns with Soma offering and priestly dhī
At moments of calling/āvāhana in Soma rites; also in recitation for success in undertakings
Offer Soma; recite as invitation for Indra to ‘open the doors’ of wealth and power
Chant before study/meditation to open clarity; use as a ‘threshold mantra’ before beginning important work.
dvara ‘door’ (IE *dhwer-; cf. English door). vavra ‘covering/enclosure’ resonates with √vṛ ‘cover’. ūdhán ‘udder’ as archetype of nourishing source. √pṛ ‘fill’ (papriḥ). su-apas ‘good work’ (apas ‘work, act’) indicates disciplined practice as condition for invocation.
Su-apas (right action as yogic discipline), Dhī (illumined intelligence), Ananda/Soma delight (andhas)
‘Svapasyā dhī’ indicates alignment with ṛta as the condition for opening.
Manīṣā (inspired thought) is the satya-bearing instrument that invokes Indra.
The secret treasure held in concealment becomes manifest through the right opening.
Aurobindo-style symbolic psychology: thresholds between planes of consciousness.
night-to-dawn threshold (implied by lunar foundation and ‘doorways’)
Doorways = transition states; udder = concealed nourishment/plenitude; moon = reflective luminous mind sustained by Soma-delight.
Contemplate the ‘inner door’: what is being guarded in you (talent, peace, insight)? Invoke Indra to open it through right work and clear thought.
ājñā (clarity) with support from anāhata (quiet joy)
Nadi-śodhana 6–6–6 for 7 rounds, then mental japa on ‘indraṃ tam ahve’
Threshold awareness: poised, alert, receptive; then fullness (pāprir) of delight.
Before practice, state one precise intention (svapasyā). Chant once aloud, then 11 times mentally, imagining a door of light opening inward—not outward—revealing a steady lunar glow of calm intelligence.
Vedic tri-svara (udātta/anudātta/svarita) per Śākala; maintain udātta prominence on key nouns/verbs.
Give clear pauses at pāda ends; lightly stress dvāraḥ/dvariṣu and ahve; let the final ‘andhasaḥ’ settle downward.
dvāraḥ: cluster dv- cleanly, long ā, dvariṣu: short a/i, avoid inserting extra vowel, ūdhani: vavra—double v sound, no b, candrabudhnaḥ: clear ndra, retroflex ḍh in budhna, maṃhiṣṭharātim: nasalized maṃ, retroflex ṣṭh, papriḥ: crisp pr, short iḥ
Clear, inviting, slightly hushed at ‘vavra/ūdhani’ to convey the secret.
