Outer meaning

King Varuṇa has made a broad path for the Sun to travel; he establishes firm footholds even where there is no footing, and he can turn back even forces that pierce the heart.

Inner meaning

Varuṇa as the lord of ṛta (truth-order) opens within us a “wide path” for the solar consciousness (Sūrya = illumined seeing) to move unobstructed. Where the being feels “groundless” (apade)—in confusion, fear, or inner crisis—the Divine Law establishes sure steps (pādāḥ) of right orientation. Varuṇa also has the power to reverse the inwardly wounding impulses—anxieties, compulsions, hostile suggestions—that strike the heart-mind (hṛdaya).

Universal truth

When consciousness aligns with a deeper law of truth, clarity finds its way, stability appears even in uncertainty, and disruptive inner forces lose their authority.

Themes

Ṛta-governance, inner illumination, establishing support in the unsupported, averting inner affliction

Rishi
Śunaḥśepa Ājīgarti
Other hymns
RV 1.24.1-15, RV 1.25.1-21

Family tradition

Tradition places these hymns in the Śunaḥśepa cycle, associated with the Ājīgarti lineage; later Itihāsa memory preserves Śunaḥśepa as a figure of bondage and release through truth-appeal to Varuṇa.

Significance

A seer of crisis-transformation: the voice that turns from fear and constraint toward the vastness of ṛta, seeking inner release (mokṣa-like loosening) through confession, alignment, and surrender to Truth.

Devata
Varuṇa (Āditya)
Epithets
rājā (king), uruśaṃsa (wide-praised, implicit in the hymn sequence), ṛtasya gopā (guardian of ṛta, thematic)
Related deities
Mitra, Ādityas, Sūrya, Agni

Cosmic role

Upholder of ṛta: stabilizes cosmic courses (Sun’s path), maintains moral-cosmic law, binds and releases beings through the cords of order.

Inner power

Conscience of Truth and vast calm authority that sets the right inner movement, restores equilibrium, and repels heart-disturbing forces.

Where it is used

Varuṇa hymns used in prayers for forgiveness, release from bonds, and restoration of order (often in Śrauta contexts alongside Āditya invocations).
