Sukta 1.148
न यं रिपवो न रिषण्यवो गर्भे सन्तं रेषणा रेषयन्ति । अन्धा अपश्या न दभन्नभिख्या नित्यास ईं प्रेतारो अरक्षन् ॥
ná yaṃ ripávo ná riṣaṇyávo gárbhe sántam reṣaṇā́ reṣáyanti | andhā́ apaśyā́ ná dabhan abhikhyā́ nítyāsa īṃ pretā́ro arakṣan ||
Protective assurance during the early/latent stage of kindling and offering: the nascent fire (garbha) is guarded from hostile forces; useful for rites emphasizing rakṣā (warding) of the sacrifice.
latency and manifestation (garbha → birth of light), ignorance as blindness (andhā apaśyā), guardianship of ṛta by eternal powers
‘Eternal guardians’ indicate the law-powers that preserve right becoming against disorder.
The true fire cannot be falsified by hostile spying; it is self-authenticating within.
Concealed birth of fire/light within matter and its protected emergence.
Aurobindo’s psychological Veda: hostile forces are inner resistances; guardians are powers of Truth-Consciousness.
Night-to-dawn transition implied (hidden to emerging)
Incubation in darkness; protection of the nascent aspiration before it faces open conflict.
Hold the new intention in the heart-cave; practice protective silence and steady warmth (tapas).
Anāhata (heart-cave)
Box-breath (equal inhale-hold-exhale-hold) gently to ‘incubate’ the flame without agitation.
Contained, inward, protected; then a subtle forward urge (pravṛtti) without exposure.
For 7 days, recite nightly; keep the aspiration inwardly guarded (avoid premature disclosure); let progress be carried by steady rhythm rather than force.
Three-tone Vedic accents per Śākala; maintain evenness—this verse benefits from steadier anudatta grounding.
Emphasize negations ‘na…na’ clearly; keep ‘garbhe santam’ connected as one sense-unit.
riṣaṇyavo: retroflex ‘ṣ’, clear ‘ṇy’ cluster, reṣaṇā: retroflex ‘ṣ’ and long ā, nityāsaḥ: long ‘ī’, visarga lightly aspirated
Protective, low and steady; avoid sharpness.
