Then he performed in the midst of tears the funeral rites of the vulture Jatayu. Wandering in search of Sita, he beheld a rakshasa named Kabandha who was dreadful, in deformed in appearance.
This verse illustrates the Dharma of gratitude and proper rites. Despite his overwhelming grief over Sita's abduction, Rama performs the funeral rites for Jatayu who sacrificed his life trying to protect Sita, honoring the bird's devotion with sacred cremation.
After learning from the dying Jatayu about Sita's abduction by Ravana, Rama performs the bird's funeral rites. Overcome with grief, he continues searching for Sita in the forest and encounters the deformed rakshasa Kabandha, who will later guide him.
The virtue of Kritajnata (gratitude) is emphasized. Rama, though a prince in exile and consumed by personal tragedy, takes the time to properly cremate Jatayu, honoring the sacrifice of the noble bird who fought Ravana to protect Sita.
